I created this piece of self-promotion a few years ago to send to an old contact (who's work and ethic I have always admired) who worked at McCann Erickson Central. At the time I wanted to do some agency freelancing to test my creative arm so knew I needed something sharp to grab the attention, especially as they probably get 10 enquiries a week.
My philosophy is this, you can't be everyone's cup of tea as a person or as a creative / designer. We can appeal to some due to our own ways and work ethic (or style) but that same thing can put off another. I guess it's all about taste. This formed the basis of my own concept. I know I have a certain kind of style which some love and others don't.
So I purchased a nice tea pot and box and then carefully crafted tiny personalised tea bags on strings (each card on string different and hand made) that had an image of a piece of work on one side and on the other an explanation of what I had done, such as copy / concept / creative and design or just creative etc. The original pot had about 20 different projects with their relevant cards all hanging out as well as a personalised message and a couple of opening paragraphs that supported my concept. I also went to the lengths of using several types of tea so you had some real variety in their as I can also do variety. Smelt nice if nothing else.
Worked a treat! That year (when I actually did in-house projects) I had lots of freelance creative placements from McCanns working on several large pitches and having a few of my concepts support their Vauxhall work, one of which was for the England Football Team pre Rio 2014.
I also used the tea pot concept to get other placements with other agencies and getting direct work for myself with some new clients.
The concept was also entered in to the Cream Awards within the highly competitive self promotion category a few years ago but sadly no cream tea.
